Educating Rita 2014
directed by Dierdre Robinson
May 30 - Jun 14 2014
When a 30-something hairdresser, with very little formal schooling, presents herself at the University of Open
Learning in a Midlands town, demanding to be ‘educated’, the resultant possibilities and the
paths she takes in this pursuit are unexpected.
Her tutor is a bored, middle-aged, dreary, drunk who has been lecturing for so long that he has forgotten
what education is all about. What follows is a journey for both of them – Rita demands and Frank grudgingly
obliges her and guides her steps to discovery, enthusiasm and achievement. But at what cost.
This heartwarming story from the pen of Willy Russell who gave us
Blood Brothers, Two for the Road and Shirley Valentine is joyous, funny, sad,
and all the other human emotions rolled in together.
