The 39 Steps
Murder, mystery, spies, romance, intrigue and a whole lot of humour combine in The 39 Steps, opening at Sunnybank Theatre Group Inc. (STG) from Friday 8 September.
With a clever comedic script by Patrick Barlow, the play brings Alfred Hitchcock’s adaptation of John Buchan’s novel, the original spy thriller, to life on stage.
The story follows handsome hero Richard Hannay who, after crossing paths with an alluring secret agent, is accused of murder and narrowly escapes the police to go on the run.
Director Chris O’Leary said he and his cast are working hard to pull this fast-paced production together.
“The play uses just four actors to play more than forty characters, which means lots of different hats, wigs, accents and costuming, not to mention some amusing onstage transformations,” Chris said. “It’s a really entertaining concept, paired with a genuinely funny script – we’re all laughing along as we rehearse.”
Chris said STG’s production of The 39 Steps will be accompanied by an exciting sound, lighting and special effects plot to help tell the story, with a few inventive staging solutions sure to garner great laughs.
“We’re staging the classic Hitchcock film - the train, bridge, West End theatre, Scottish moors and a scene in a moving car – you will have to let your imagination loose along with us, but that’s all part of the fun!”
STG President Paul Marshall said he is looking forward to welcoming guests, seasoned and new, to the theatre during the three-week season for The 39 Steps.
